The Crimson Tide women earned the best third place finish in the program with 166 points, while the men finished 27th with 684 points
STILLWATER, Oklahoma – The Alabama women placed program-best third overall Saturday morning at the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships at The Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
The event capped an exceptional season for the Crimson Tide women, who took home their first NCAA trophy (top four teams finish on the podium) after winning their first Southeastern Conference title since 1987 and the first NCAA South Regional Championships won since 1986.
The women’s best-ever finish came in 1987 when the Crimson Tide placed sixth. Saturday also marked the UA Women’s third top-10 finish after finishing eighth two years ago and sixth in 1987. The men from Alabama finished 27ththbringing together their end from a year ago.
Alabama head coach Dan Waters said
“Our women ended a fantastic season with the best national championship result in the history of the program. They were there from the start and fought their way to our first podium, which means we’re bringing NCAA hardware back to Tuscaloosa. We are very proud of the work they have done throughout the season and the way they have represented this university. We didn’t have the finish we could get in the men’s race but overall it’s been a great season for us and we’re looking forward to keeping things going on the track.”
The Crimson Tide Women – 3approx (166 points)
- Overall, Alabama had four runners in the top 16, led by rookie Hilda Olemomoi, who finished sixth in 19:45.6
- Amaris Tyynismaa (19:48.2) was ninth, marking her second top 10 finish at the Nationals after finishing third two years ago
- Flomena Asekol (19:56.5) was 14thth and Mercy Chelangat (19:58.4) crossed the finish line in 16th placeth
- Elka Machan (20:57.7) completed Alabama’s scoring with five points and finished 155thth
- Jami Reed (21:40.7) finished 222ndnd and Sam McDonnell (22:37.2) was 248th
- It was Alabama’s 11thth Top 25 finish at national championships, 10thth in the top 20 and third in the top 10
- It was the women’s third consecutive top 15 finish after finishing eighth and 15th in 2020th in 2021
The Alabama Men – May 27th (683 points)
- Victor Kiprop led the men’s 66th placeth in a time of 29:52.5 while Eliud Kipsang (30:11.6) crossed the finish line in 98th
- Jacob Wiggers (31:01.2) was 198th and Hillary Cheruiyot (31:09.3) took 209th
- Brady Grant rounded out the Tide score at five for a 232nd in a time of 31:38.8
- Gavin Saacke (32:05.1) and Brady Barton (32:30.2) completed the UA men’s lineup
- It was the 22ndnd Top 30 finish for the men at the NCAA championships
