His current contract with the Crimson Tide expires on February 28th.

Prior to Alabama, O’Brien spent most of his coaching career since 2007 in the NFL. He is best known for his stints as a head coach at Houston (2014-20) and as an assistant and coordinator at New England (2007-11). . If he gets the job with the Patriots, he would reunite with Bill Belichick — and work with Mac Jones. He posted a 54-52 record in Houston but was fired after a 0-4 start to the 2020 season. O’Brien led the Texans to nine or more wins in 5 of 7 seasons.

Prior to his time with the Texans, O’Brien was the head coach at Penn State from 2012-2013. He took on the unenviable task of replacing Joe Paterno on Happy Valley in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal. O’Brien led the Nittany Lions to a 15-9 record. In addition to Penn State, O’Brien was a coordinator at Georgia Tech (2001-02) and Duke (2005-06) and was an assistant coach at Georgia Tech (1995-2000), Maryland (2003-04) and his alma mater, Brown (1993- 94).

In two seasons in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the Tide offensive averaged more than 483.1 yards and 40.4 points per game, with O’Brien pulling the strings. UA has ranked in the top 5 in the SEC for scoring, total and passing offense for the past two years, and in 2021 quarterback Bryce Young set school records for passing yards and passing and total touchdowns in a single season on his way to winning the Tide’s on fourth Heisman Trophy and first by a signal caller.

“I loved it,” O’Brien said of his experience in Alabama this postseason. “I loved coaching these guys. I loved being part of this team. These guys work really hard. Those of you who follow us every day surely see the work that went into it. These kids practice hard. You lift heavy. You go to class. You make things right. And I think it’s been a great experience for me to be here for the last two years and see how it all works.

“And then seeing Coach Saban perform was a great experience for me. It’s an invaluable experience. And then working with the staff, working with the offensive staff. And then when we come over, we work together with the defense staff, that was a great experience for me.
