Rain makes for a wet Sunday in central Alabama

WEEKEND WEATHER Much of Saturday was fine with filtered sunshine and high temperatures approaching 60 degrees. However, changes are coming as clouds increase tonight. These high clouds signal a change in weather for Sunday: back to rain. Some rain sometimes gets heavy. Showers will begin late Saturday night over northwest Alabama and spread to the rest of the state throughout Sunday. Expect rain essentially from start to finish: a very wet day with temperatures in the 50’s. A band of significant precipitation begins over the southern half of the state, where up to 2 inches accumulate near US 80 (Demopolis to Montgomery). Jefferson and Shelby Counties are averaging about ½ to 1.5 inches, and we’re expecting less than an inch of rain through Sunday night northeast of Birmingham through Cullman, Gadsden, Anniston, Fort Payne and Scottsboro Clouds will hang around for a while. Next week there will be precious little sunshine and much more rain. An arctic cold front pulls through Tuesday, but by the time the air makes its way into central Alabama, it doesn’t really have much “punch” left: Temperatures in the 40s and 50 seconds for highs under mostly cloudy skies on Tuesday and Wednesday. Showers are likely on Tuesday, with heavier rain on Wednesday and Thursday as another cold front moves into the region. Generally, 2-3 inches of rain will fall over most of Alabama by next Friday: almost all liquid. There will be some chance of wintry weather (mostly a mix) in Tennessee, but we don’t expect it to have a major impact on Alabama’s weather next week.
