NEXT UP: Montana State begins three straight San Jose State road games on Tuesday, November 22 at 7 p.m. MT at the Provident Credit Union Event Center in San Jose, California. After its competition with the Spartans, the Bobcats will fly to Dallas, Texas, where it will compete in the University of North Texas Thanksgiving Tournament. MSU opens Friday’s tournament game against Abilene Christian at 4:00 p.m. MT and closes game against UNT on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Both games will be played at The Super Pit in Denton, Texas on Mean Green’s campus.
ONE MINUTE HAS PASSED: Montana State and San Jose State meet for the fourth time Tuesday night, with the Spartans leading 2-1 in the all-time series. The two schools last met almost 22 years ago — a 53-50 decision in favor of SJSU.
BOBCAT BITES: Leia Beattie was recognized as Bobcat Player of the Week for her performances as Montana State faced Arizona State and North Dakota at Worthington Arena last week. The Midland, Texas junior averaged 11.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 40.9% from the field and 75% from the line. Beattie had her best game against North Dakota with 14 points and finished 6 of 11 from the field.
THE SCOUTING REPORT: San Jose State is 1-2 heading into Tuesday night’s contest with the Bobcats. The Spartans claim a 48-42 win at Cal State Northridge on Sunday afternoon. Against the Matadors, San Jose State was led by Sidney Richards and Jada Holland with 14 and 13 points, respectively. As a unit, SJUS shot 27.9% from the field, 27.6% from long range, and was six of 11 at the line. Defensively, the Spartans were led by Marisa Davis-Jones and Amhyia Moreland with nine and eight rebounds, respectively. During the season, Holland, a 5-6 senior guard from Pleasanton, Calif., leads the Spartans with an average of 13.3 points per game. Davis-Jones, a 6-1 sophomore from Surprise, Arizona, led San Jose State by averaging 9.3 boards per match. The Spartans, who lost their first two games — Tulsa (74-44) and Cal State Fullerton (71-63) — are led by April Phillips, who is in her first season with the SJSU program. Phillips previously spent a season as an assistant with Texas. She has also had coaching stops in Cal, Arizona, Loyola Marymount, Georgia Tech and New Haven. A native of Long Beach, California, Phillips played one season at Georgia Tech before retiring from Xavier.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME: For the past 10 seasons, the Bobcats have performed well in the warm confines of Worthington Arena. Since the 2012-13 season, Montana State has gone an impressive 106-31 (77.4%) overall and 72-22 (76.6%) in Big Sky Conference play on its home court. During that span — from the start of the 2015-16 Big Sky season to the start of the 2017-18 league games — MSU has enjoyed a 19-game winning streak on home court in Big Sky action. Overall, in her 17 seasons with Montana State, Binford went 153-71 (68.3%) and 102-47 (68.5%) at Big Sky at Worthington Arena.
