Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 3 Release Date and Synopsis
Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 3 arrived on Sunday November 22nd, 2022 on Paramount Network in the USA.
The episode, titled Tall Drink of Water, began with a flashback to a young John Dutton dealing with wolves threatening the ranch and local community.
In the present day and now Governor of Montana, John must contend with wolves of a different species while trying to come to terms with his new role as potential enemies look on, while the situation also mirrors the accidental killing of geotagged wolves in Episode 2.
Kayce, still grieving the loss of his newborn son, tries to keep himself occupied and to help his family, and promotes the opportunity to become a ranger in Montana.
Market Equities’ newly arrived corporate shark, Sarah Atwood, continues to dig into the situation, targeting the vulnerable Jamie in order to infiltrate the Duttons.
And finally, after some real estate deals in Salt Lake City that will help hamper the stock market, Beth returns to the ranch and suggests that the Bunkhouse crew should go to a bar to celebrate Lloyd’s birthday.
The evening begins pleasantly enough, but as always in Yellowstone, it ends in violence when Beth hits a bottle over the head of a woman who hit Rip.

Josh Lucas as young John Dutton
Episode 3 stars Josh Lucas as “young” John Dutton.
The 51-year-old actor has appeared in film and television roles since 1990 and has more than 80 credits to his name, with his most notable performances being 2002’s Sweet Home Alabama, Glory Road, Ford vs. Ferrari (aka Le Mans ’66), The Forever Purge, The Mysteries Of Laura, Big Sur and the 2011 film The Lincoln Lawyer.
Kyle Red Silverstein as Young Rip
A young John isn’t the only character we see in the episode’s flashbacks when Kyle Red Silverstein returns as young Rip Wheeler.
The 20-year-old actor has had a number of notable roles with appearances on Grey’s Anatomy as Ethan Dawson, Blended, Instant Mom, Black-ish, Sydney To The Max and the anthology series American Horror Stories.
Dawn Olivieri as Sarah Atwood
Sarah Atwood was introduced in Episode 2 and will likely be a thorn in the side of the Duttons in Season 5.
She’s played by actress Dawn Olivieri, who fans will likely recognize from her roles in House Of Lies, SEAL Team, Den Of Thieves, Lucifer, The Vampire Diaries and Netflix’ Bright.
Dawn is already a veteran of the Yellowstone universe, having played the role of Claire Dutton in the 1883 prequel series.
Kai Caster as a rowdy
Kai Caster is a notable addition in Season 5, having previously performed at Yellowstone. In season 2 he played a young version of Kayce Dutton.
Aside from his roles in Yellowstone, Kai has roles in American Horror Story, House Of Lies, Shameless, Magnum PI and The Baxters.
Forrest Wilder as Young Lloyd
Forrest Wilder (aka Forrest Smith) takes on the role of a young Lloyd in Season 5, having previously appeared as a character in Season 2.
Though his role may be small, Forrest has been hailed as the perfect cast for the role of a young Lloyd, and it’s no surprise since the actor is the son of Forrie J. Smith, the actor behind the older Lloyd.
Lainey Wilson as Abby
Abby was a notable addition in Season 5 as she quickly caught the attention of Bunkhouse crew member Ryan.
The role is played by Lainey Wilson, a country music singer-songwriter making her acting debut in Yellowstone, although Episode 3 certainly put her singing skills to good use when she appeared in the final bar scene.
Ashley Square as Hailey Brewer
Hailey Brewer only played a minor role in Episode 3 as she was on the receiving end of Beth’s anger. However, her character shares her last name with John’s assistant, Clara, so there may be a family connection there that creates tension later in the season.
The role is played by Ashley Platz, an experienced actress who has nearly 60 credits to her name, with roles on NCIS, Atypical, The Bold Type, GLOW, 9-1-1 and Hawaii 5-0.
Matthew Jones as Sheriff Larsen
And finally, we end with Matthew Jones being reappointed as Sheriff Larsen in season 5 after appearing as a deputy in season 4.
The actor has plenty of experience, albeit in largely minor roles, with credits on Bosch: Legacy, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Ad Astra, Narcos: Mexico, NCIS and General Hospital.
Yellowstone Season 5 airs weekly on Paramount Network in the US and Paramount+ internationally.
