Chimney fires are dangerous and costly, but they are preventable.
John Ceaser is the owner of Ceaser Chimney Services, the largest chimney company in the Granite State. He said it gets quite crowded before the cold season.
“Really, every September it’s Labor Day, the phones are blasting, everyone is calling at the last minute to get their chimneys checked and swept and ready,” Ceaser said.
Ceaser said chimney fires are a big problem. He said homeowners must ensure their chimneys are inspected and swept even when not in use.
There are a few things homeowners can look out for to avoid a problem. Ceasar said some people get red flags from smells or even sounds like a jet plane flying by.
“With a chimney fire, you usually hear a roaring sound, you see flames or heat or glowing pipes or smoke,” Ceaser said.
He also recommends making sure boilers and stoves are working properly.
“When almost every chimney in New Hampshire has a boiler or furnace running and these devices are rotting the chimney inside out, homeowners should definitely call to get these if they haven’t had their chimneys checked in a long time ‘ Caesar said.
